Microsoft Flight Simulator

The whole planet, built from satellite imagery down to two trillion trees and a billion and a half buildings, with the real weather happening right now. If it is storming over Chicago tonight, it is storming over Chicago in the sim. You can take off from Meigs Field, the lakefront strip the city bulldozed in 2003 and the sim never let go of, in a Cessna 172, and work your way up to landing a 747 at O'Hare. Student pilots use it to rehearse lessons, because the instruments and the procedures are the ones instructors teach.

Elite Dangerous

A one-to-one Milky Way. Four hundred billion star systems, and you can fly to any of them. The first time you climb out of a station in VR, look up, and realize the ship has a ceiling and space does not, something rearranges in your head. Then you earn the permit for Sol and fly home. Our actual sun, our actual planets, in the right places, tiny against everything else. It is the most humbling thing I have done at a desk.

The Viper

DCS World

Hardcore. Every switch in the cockpit does what it does in the real jet, and the manual for one aircraft runs three hundred pages before you get to tactics. A full cold start in the F-16 is a checklist and fifteen minutes. That sounds like homework until you realize you are learning how a real fighter actually works, in a way almost nobody outside an air force gets to. It is the best brain teaser I own.

WINGMANGetting to the starting line

The stick shows up and the game ignores it. The headset works in the menu and stutters in the cockpit. Windows updates and your bindings vanish. This is where most people quit.
